When it comes to assisted living, there are a number of factors to evaluate such as location, quality of care, amenities, access to resources, and others. One of the major concerns we hear from individuals and from the family of an elderly or disabled loved one is the cost of assisted living communities. We understand how important the service we provide is and we pride ourselves on providing those in need with the best services possible.
There are a number of Indiana and national programs that can help with the costs involved in caring for the older population and those living with a disability. These local and federal government assistance programs can often make the difference. You may find that any one or combination of these financial assistance opportunities puts a quality live-in community like Riverwalk within reach.
Veteran’s Aid & Attendance Pension: This program is available to veterans and their spouse with less than $80,000 in assets through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The pension can provide up to $1,758 for veterans, $1,130 for spouses, and $2,085 for couples on a monthly basis. (Dollar values as of 1/1/2014)
Supplying a copy of the service member’s DD-214 and completing the Veterans Application for Pension or Compensation are required to prove eligibility. (Form 21-534 surviving spouse) (Form 21-526 Veteran)
Medicare does not cover assisted living, but in some situations, Medicaid will. Medicaid provides health care coverage for low-to-no income seniors and elderly individuals with disabilities. Under section 1915(c) Home & Community-Based Waivers, states can help subsidize the cost of assisted living for individuals on Medicaid and in need of long-term care or adult day health care. In the state of Indiana, there are two types of waivers: Aged and Disabled (A&D) Waiver and the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Wavier. More details can be found on the official Indiana government website.
